While the classic flip flop reigned supreme this summer (thank you, The Row), it felt as though there was something almost feral in the air. Chalk it up to brat summer or just a case of footwear fatigue, but celebrities let their freak flags fly this summer when it came to their shoes.
The stars spiced up their everyday errands, travel, and jaunts about town with some freaky footwear. Ahead of her opening ceremony performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Lady Gaga was spotted around the French capital in a pair of six-inch black patent leather platform Pleaser boots. Meanwhile, Emily Ratajkowski embraced the Brain Dead x Oakley collaboration with a pair of slip-ons called the “Team Flesh.” EmRata proved that these python patterned shoes go with everything from a miniskirt to GORPy drawstring pants. Chloë Sevigny also went full GORP, taking her outdoorsy lace-up ballet flats from ECCO all over town.
But even formalwear has the potential for some spicy shakeups in the shoe department. The Cannes Film Festival, with its strict sartorial rules proved a perfect place for the more rebellious to try something new. Bella Hadid kept it elegant in a pair of Jacquemus double heeled sandals, which appeared as though two heels were stacked on top of each other, while Greta Gerwig (one of the festival’s jurors) opted for white platform Margiela Tabi pumps.
